Greenspan knew that his job was not to fine-tune the economy to maintain a steady course to encourage growth and cushion the inevitable busts. "I believe that we as a people are very fortunate," Greenspan said in a 2000 speech. "When confronted with the choice between rapid growth with its inevitable insecurities and a stable, but stagnant economy, given time, Americans have chosen growth." Greenspan made the same choice, and we are all the better for it.
